I treasure and love Speakers’ Corner – the concept of actual free speech must be protected.
There are many areas designated as Speakers’ Corners in parks in London. Still, the original and perhaps best known is the paved area closest to Marble Arch in the North-East corner of Hyde Park.
On Sunday afternoons in Hyde Park, you rock up and start talking, respectfully, to anyone about anything. This can result in some long rambling and inconclusive discussions! But that’s not the point. In my opinion, everyone has the right to express an opinion and be respectfully argued against.
Individuals expressing the freedom of speech at Hyde Park over the years include – Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, George Orwell, C. L. R. James, Walter Rodney, Ben Tillett, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, and William Morris.
