I have admired and enjoyed Frank Auerbach’s paintings for many years. Some of his work was recently on display in London at the Courtauld Gallery, so I visited it when I was in the capital.
I wasn’t disappointed!
I just love the thick texture that he manages to incorporate into his work. In some regards, the object or person he is painting is secondary to the texture… thus, the paint becomes the subject.
At 93 years of age, Frank Auerbach is still working and producing credible work, but he recognises he is an old man and, in a recent Guardian interview, explained how he is currently producing what must be some of his last works.
